Why people look for a Memrise alternative
- The course decides what you learn. Memrise is good at drilling the words of its courses, but learning the vocabulary you need right now (for work, a move abroad or an exam) is harder.
- Words stay as separate items. Recognising a word on a card is not the same as understanding it in a text and using it when you speak.
- Many tools are in Pro. Speaking practice, offline mode and most advanced features need a subscription.
Can you use it together with Memrise?
Yes. Memrise videos are great for hearing how people really speak, and NewLexi helps you lock in the words you pick up there, in shows or at work. Add them as text or from a photo, and the app puts them into spaced repetition and into stories at your level. More on the method: why you need to almost forget a word to learn it.
FAQ
How is NewLexi different from Memrise?
Memrise teaches the words of its ready-made courses. NewLexi teaches the words you choose: each one gets spaced repetition and comes back in stories and dialogues written just for you at your level, with grammar from A1 to C2 in the same plan.
Can I move my words from Memrise?
Memrise has no export of your learned words, but you can paste any word list into NewLexi as text, add words from a photo or generate cards on any topic.
Is NewLexi free?
Core features are free and without ads. Generating word sets, stories and dialogues, as well as extended materials, comes with a subscription you can cancel at any time.
Is there an Android or web version?
Not yet. NewLexi is available for iPhone only.
Which languages can I learn?
English, Italian, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Greek, Serbian, Turkish and Chinese.
