From Anki
You need an export file. In Anki on a computer, open the deck, choose Export and the “Anki Deck Package (.apkg)” format. CSV and TSV tables and plain text lists are accepted too - they need two columns: word and translation. Quizlet exports exactly like that.
- Send the file to your phone: AirDrop, Files, email or iCloud.
- In the app: “Add words” → “Anki file or spreadsheet”.
- Pick the file. The app parses it and shows the decks and columns it found.
- Assign roles to the columns: “Word”, “Translation” or “Skip”. If word and translation are the wrong way round, there is “Swap word and translation”.
- Tap “Next” and check the list before adding.
If you don't have a file at hand, you can simply paste the words: “Add words” → “Paste text”. Word and translation on one line, separated by a tab, a comma or a semicolon.
From a photo
A textbook page, a notebook or a screenshot will do. The app recognises the text right on the device and offers the words you don't have yet.
- “Add words” → “Photo or scan”.
- Shoot one whole page, straight on, from 20-30 cm away. You can also pick an existing photo from the gallery.
- Frame the new-words block, or tap “Next” - the boundaries will be found on their own.
- Tap “Translate and review”.
- Words without a translation are highlighted: without one they won't be saved. Type your own or tap “Translate” to fill them all at once.
- Handwriting is recognised worse than print: block letters work noticeably better.
The review screen
It is the same for a file and for a photo, and nothing is added without it. The screen is called “Check the words”: here you see how many will be saved, where the duplicates are, which rows have no translation and which deck everything goes to. Until you tap “Add”, nothing in your deck has changed.
